More about this artwork

"Contemplation" (1922) by John William Godward is a striking example of the artist’s dedication to classical themes and his mastery in rendering the beauty of both human figures and textures. This oil painting portrays a young woman dressed in a richly colored classical robe, posed against a meticulously detailed marble background. The woman, caught in a moment of repose, rests her arm gracefully above her head, her expression introspective and serene. The textures in the painting are a testament to Godward's skill: the lush, tactile quality of the red and purple fabric contrasts with the smooth, cool marble on which she leans. Her dress, a cascade of vivid reds and deep purples, is cinched with a green sash, adding a striking contrast that draws the viewer's eye. The realism with which Godward has painted the fabrics and the marble lends a sensuousness to the work, inviting the viewer to almost feel the coolness of the stone and the softness of the fabric."Contemplation" is not just a display of aesthetic and technical skill, but also evokes a mood of quiet introspection, perhaps mirroring the wistful nostalgia for the ancient world that typified much of Godward’s work.

John William Godward was an English painter from the end of the Neo-Classicist era. He was a protégé of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, but his style of painting fell out of favor with the rise of modern art.

Godward was born in 1861 and lived in Wilton Grove, Wimbledon. He was born to Sarah Eboral and John Godward (an investment clerk at the Law Life Assurance Society, London).
