More about this artwork

"Leisure Hours" is a captivating painting by John William Godward, created in 1905, that beautifully captures the essence of serene contemplation and classic grace. The artwork features a young woman dressed in a richly colored ancient Roman-style robe, lounging elegantly against a marble balustrade. Her attire is strikingly detailed with vibrant hues of yellow and green, complemented by a deep purple fabric that gently drapes across her lap.In a posture of leisurely repose, she rests her cheek on her hand, looking out pensively over a tranquil sea landscape. The backdrop reveals a distant coastal view, dotted with classical architecture under a clear blue sky, suggesting a Mediterranean setting. Beside her is a prominently placed hand fan, reinforcing the ambiance of a warm, lazy day.Adorning the marble balustrade are intricate bas-reliefs depicting playful figures, adding an element of whimsy and artistic depth to the scene. Lush oleanders with vivid pink blossoms enliven the composition, enhancing the sense of peace and idyllic leisure.

John William Godward was an English painter from the end of the Neo-Classicist era. He was a protégé of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, but his style of painting fell out of favor with the rise of modern art.

Godward was born in 1861 and lived in Wilton Grove, Wimbledon. He was born to Sarah Eboral and John Godward (an investment clerk at the Law Life Assurance Society, London).
