More about this artwork

"The Virgin with Angels" is a captivating painting by the acclaimed 19th-century French artist William-Adolphe Bouguereau, completed in the year 1900. This enchanting work captures a celestial scene where the Virgin Mary, portraying serenity and grace, is surrounded by a host of angels. The painting communicates a delicate yet profound sense of peace and divine presence. In the composition, Mary, dressed in a flowing dark robe with a subtle blue trim and a veil, holds the infant Christ gently in her arms. Both figures embody an ethereal calmness, with the young Christ gesturing a blessing. Encircling them are numerous angels, each meticulously painted with individual expressions of reverence and adoration. The angels, arrayed in soft, luminous gowns, seem to be in a state of worship or in the act of singing praises, enhancing the sacred atmosphere. The backdrop is simple yet effective, focusing the viewer's attention on the intimate group at the center. The use of light is particularly striking, as Bouguereau employs a radiant light that seems to emanate from the figures themselves, symbolizing their divine nature. The painting not only showcases Bouguereau’s mastery of the human form and his ability to capture the nuances of youthful innocence and purity but also reflects his dedication to religious themes infused with a heavenly tranquility.

William-Adolphe Bouguereau was a French academic painter. In paintings of the realistic genre, he used mythological themes, modern interpretation of classical themes, emphasizing the female human body. During his lifetime, he achieved great popularity in France and the United States, was awarded many official honors, and sold his works for top prices. In the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art disappeared from the public eye, partly due to its changing artistic tastes. A resurgence of interest in figurative painting in the 1980s led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work. He completed 822 known paintings, but the whereabouts of many are still unknown.
