More about this artwork
The painting portrays a close-up view of a person's neck and lower face. The skin is pale, almost blending with the stark, off-white background that transitions into a deep black near the top. The individual features a meticulously painted dark, feathered mustache and a series of piercings: two in each earlobe and one in the center below the lower lip. A thin trail of ants marches upward across the neck and onto the face, disappearing near one of the lips, evoking a sense of creeping decay or invasion. The shirt, partially visible, is white with a softly detailed collar and a button; it's undone to reveal a hint of collarbone and the upper chest.
