More about this artwork

Featured in our current exhibit, William Bouguereau's 1899 masterpiece, “Le Citron,” captivates with its intimate portrayal of a young girl and her contemplative gaze. This classic oil painting is a stunning representation of Bouguereau's skill at capturing the delicate features and subtle emotions of his subjects. In “Le Citron,” the viewer encounters a young girl holding a bright lemon in her hands. Her expression, thoughtful and slightly bemused, evokes a sense of quiet solitude and reflective innocence. The gentle light illuminates her face and the lemon, casting gentle shadows and highlights that give the composition a tender realism. Her white dress and the ribbon in her hair add touches of purity and youthfulness to the scene. This painting not only showcases Bouguereau's impeccable technique but also his profound ability to convey rich emotional depth through simple, everyday scenes.

William-Adolphe Bouguereau was a French academic painter. In paintings of the realistic genre, he used mythological themes, modern interpretation of classical themes, emphasizing the female human body. During his lifetime, he achieved great popularity in France and the United States, was awarded many official honors, and sold his works for top prices. In the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art disappeared from the public eye, partly due to its changing artistic tastes. A resurgence of interest in figurative painting in the 1980s led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work. He completed 822 known paintings, but the whereabouts of many are still unknown.
