More about this artwork

Description:"La jeune fille avec la buffle" (The Young Girl with the Buffalo) is a captivating 1913 painting by the notable artist Ludwig Deutsch, known for his detailed and vivid portrayal of everyday scenes. This particular artwork presents a serene and pastoral scene, set beside a tranquil body of water. At the center of the composition stands a young girl, guiding a large buffalo through the shallow edge of the water. The girl, dressed in a simple yet vibrant outfit with red accents, appears contemplative, casting a pensive gaze across the water. Her connection with the buffalo suggests a narrative of daily life and labor, emphasizing a harmony between humans and nature. The background features gently sloping hills and a lush, verdant landscape, illuminated by the warm glow of sunlight. A single tree with a flourishing canopy anchors the composition on the right, adding a sense of tranquility and depth to the scene. In "La jeune fille avec la buffle," Deutsch masterfully combines natural light, vibrant colors, and meticulous detail to create an artwork that is not only visually striking but also evokes a sense of calm and introspection.

Details of Ludwig Deutsch's life are obscure. He was born in Vienna in 1855 into a well-established Jewish family. His father Ignaz Deutsch was a financier at the Austrian court. He studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts 1872–1875, then, in 1878, moved to Paris where he became strongly associated with Orientalism.
