More about this artwork

"Music at Home," a captivating illustration by John Singer Sargent, portrays an evocative scene of domestic musical entertainment around the late 19th century. This artwork skillfully captures the dynamic and occasionally chaotic nature of amateur music-making at home.In the drawing, we observe a group of six individuals engaged in a lively musical session. Central to the scene is a woman at the piano, who appears to be accompanying three male vocalists, each exhibiting different expressions of concentration and effort. The humor of the piece lies in their exaggerated poses and expressions, suggesting they are struggling yet enthusiastic participants, possibly singing loudly and off-key, as implied by the caption that notes the challenge of coaching "three near-sighted but very powerful amateur vocalists."To the right, a man stands with his hand on his hip, watching the scene unfold, possibly critiquing or merely enjoying the performance. His posture suggests a blend of amusement and patience. Another woman, positioned behind the trio of singers, lays her hand on the shoulder of one, perhaps in a comforting or stabilizing gesture. The room is sketched with quick, expressive lines, giving an intimate, cozy ambiance to the setting. Light streams in from the upper left, casting shadows and highlighting the animated faces and draped clothing of the participants.Through "Music at Home", Sargent not only demonstrates his keen observational skills and fine draughtsmanship but also conveys the universal joy and trials of family and friends gathering to enjoy music, despite their varied musical talents.

Born in Florence to American expatriate parents, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) is considered Europe's leading portrait painter of the Edwardian era. He was educated at both Accademia delle Belle Arti and Paris's École des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, under the guidance of Émile–Auguste Carolus–Duran, a portraitist and muralist, Sargent learned to paint directly from observation without first sketching, employing a fluidity, influenced by the Impressionists. Sargent created more than 2,900 paintings, mainly portraits and landscapes from his travels across the Atlantic, Europe, the Middle East and America.
