More about this artwork

John Singer Sargent's evocative watercolor, "Woman With Parasol," painted around 1888, captures a serene moment in the luminous outdoors. In this delightful study of light and color, Sargent portrays a woman dressed in a long white gown accented with dark shawls or vests. Her face is partly obscured by a large, billowing white bonnet that blends softly into the bright, indistinct background, where light seems to dance on water and greenery alike. The piece is distinguished by its loose, fluid brushstrokes that convey a feeling of breezy warmth and casual elegance. The woman, seated on grass, is partially shown, with a focus on the flowing contours of her dress and the delicate pattern of a folded parasol next to her. This parasol, adorned with what appear to be small floral or sunlit motifs, echoes the playful light that characterizes this pastoral scene. Moreover, the scene's backdrop, though sketchily rendered, hints at a tranquil water body and lush greenery, enhancing the atmosphere of a peaceful, sunlit day. Sargent’s mastery in watercolor is evident in the way he manipulates washes of color to suggest depth and texture with minimal detail, allowing the viewer's eye to fill in the blanks."Woman With Parasol" invites viewers to partake in a moment of quietude and leisure, characteristic of Sargent’s best garden and outdoor studies, where the interplay of natural light and informal settings always takes center stage.

Born in Florence to American expatriate parents, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) is considered Europe's leading portrait painter of the Edwardian era. He was educated at both Accademia delle Belle Arti and Paris's École des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, under the guidance of Émile–Auguste Carolus–Duran, a portraitist and muralist, Sargent learned to paint directly from observation without first sketching, employing a fluidity, influenced by the Impressionists. Sargent created more than 2,900 paintings, mainly portraits and landscapes from his travels across the Atlantic, Europe, the Middle East and America.
