More about this artwork

Karl Wiener’s artwork, Ohne Titel (Einzelfigur), created around 1935, presents a fascinating exploration of form and character through its depiction of a solitary figure. This piece, rendered in a compelling watercolor technique, engages in a dialogue between abstraction and representation that was quite characteristic of the era’s modernist movements. The figure in the painting is portrayed with an enigmatic expression, enhanced by sharp, angular lines that suggest both the geometric influence of Cubism and the emotional depth of Expressionism. With a neutral palette accented by hints of subtle color, Wiener’s work focuses on the interplay of shapes and the rhythmic composition of lines that envelop the figure. The humanoid subject stands centered, adorned in a geometrically patterned outfit, which features circular and linear motifs. This attire, combined with the structured posture and stylized features of the figure, evokes a sense of otherworldliness, perhaps even the influence of contemporaneous artistic movements such as Bauhaus, which emphasized the synthesis of art with industrial design.Ohne Titel (Einzelfigur) holds a viewer’s gaze with its layered complexity and invites interpretation on multiple levels—from the formal exploration of the medium to the emotional resonance of its depicted subject.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
