More about this artwork

The painting "Aufgehender Mond" by Karl Wiener, created in 1924, captures a hauntingly beautiful industrial landscape under the light of a rising moon. The artwork is imbued with a sense of stillness and mystery, evoking a serene yet slightly melancholic atmosphere. The scene is set at dusk, as the moon ascends into a cloud-streaked sky, casting a warm, glowing orb of light that contrasts starkly with the surrounding darkness. In the foreground, Wiener skillfully uses muted colors and detailed textures to depict an array of industrial elements. Telecommunication poles, intricately wired and standing tall, lead the viewer's eye towards the horizon. A rustic wooden fence and a gently curving railway track add to the rustic industrial feeling of the scene. These man-made structures intersect with the natural landscape, creating a harmonious yet complex tableau that reflects the encroachment of industrialization into natural spaces.A solitary street lamp, unlit in the presence of the moon's natural luminescence, adds a touch of solitude and reinforces the theme of nature versus human innovation. The fine texturing and interplay of light and shadow across the composition reveal Wiener’s meticulous attention to detail and his ability to evoke emotion through a subdued palette and compelling imagery."Aufgehender Mond" is a masterful representation of the quiet moments that occur at the intersection of natural and manufactured environments, reminding us of the quiet beauty that exists in our everyday surroundings.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
