More about this artwork

Karl Wiener's "Weiblicher Halbakt" is a compelling piece from 1942 that captures a unique stylization of the female form. In this painting, a woman stands with a posture of strength and poise, framed by an intriguing play of geometric and organic shapes. The upper half of her body is undressed, depicted in bold colors that create a striking contrast with the colder, deeper hues of her skirt.Wiener’s use of color is particularly notable in this composition. The warm tones of the subject's skin against the vibrant blue of her skirt and the subtle yet distinct backgrounds of yellow and tan invite the viewer into a contemplative narrative about light and texture. The woman’s confident pose, coupled with her direct and forthright gaze, challenges the viewer, projecting an air of independence and self-assurance.This painting exemplifies Wiener's unique approach to form and color, rendering emotive and evocative human subjects within a distinctly modern framework. The minimalist background serves to further highlight the figure, drawing attention to the deliberate brushstrokes and color choices that suggest both physical and emotional depth."Weiblicher Halbakt" is not just a visual entity but a statement of form, emotion, and artistic intent, creating a gripping visual experience that resonates with themes of femininity and empowerment.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
