More about this artwork

Titled "Aufbau in Rot, Grün und Blau" (Construction in Red, Green, and Blue), this intriguing painting by artist Karl Wiener, dating from around 1923, beckons viewers into a vivid, abstract landscape. The art features a harmonious yet complex interplay of shapes and colors, predominantly in red, green, and blue hues.At first glance, the central focus of the artwork is a towering, spiral-like form that ascends toward the top of the composition. This form, outlined in bold red, intertwines with serpentine bands of green and blue, creating a dynamic sense of movement and depth. These intertwining ribbons suggest a fluid, organic growth, reminiscent of natural forms like vines or tendrils climbing upwards.Below this central spiral, the composition grounds itself with blockier, architectural shapes in green, lending a sense of stability and contrast to the sinuous forms above. This juxtaposition invites viewers to contemplate the relationship between the natural and the constructed, the organic and the geometric.Karl Wiener's skilled use of color not only differentiates between the elements but also serves to evoke different moods and layers within the painting. The reds are vibrant and energetic, the blues deep and introspective, and the greens bridge these two with a sense of life and renewal.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
