More about this artwork

Despite its title, "Weibliches Porträt VI" (Female Portrait VI), the artwork intriguingly presents a depiction not typical of a feminine portrait. Created by Karl Wiener in 1942, this piece showcases a striking profile view of a male subject, adding a layer of complexity and ambiguity. The portrait, rendered in soft, yet precise charcoal lines, captures intricate facial features and expressions that convey a serene, introspective mood. The subject's eyes gaze off into a distance, suggesting deep thought or contemplation. The use of light and shadow enhances the anatomical details of the face, highlighting the cheekbones and the curvature of the nose, which draw the viewer into a silent dialogue with the subject. This artwork by Karl Wiener might be seen as an exploration of identity and the fluidity of gender representation in art, challenging the viewers' preconceptions and inviting them to ponder the narrative behind the figure depicted. The muted tones and the focused composition further emphasize the timeless and universal human emotions conveyed through this compelling portrait."Weibliches Porträt VI" offers a unique and thought-provoking visual experience, raising questions about identity, representation, and the ways in which art intersects with societal norms.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
