More about this artwork

Dive into the mesmerizing world of Karl Wiener with his evocative masterpiece "Sonnenstrahlen" ("Sunbeams"), created around 1930. This artwork stands as a testament to Wiener's skill in harnessing simple monochromatic tones to portray profound atmospheric effects. In "Sonnenstrahlen," viewers encounter a landscape dominated by bold, dark mountainous forms that rise starkly against a lighter, textured sky. These mountains, rendered with a sense of solidity and weight, anchor the composition, drawing the eye towards their rugged peaks. The magic of the painting lies in the dramatic play of light and shadow across these features, suggesting the early or late hours of the day when shadows are long and the light is golden. The sky, a canvas of light, hosts delicate clouds that seem to float effortlessly, diffusing the sunlight that streaks across the scene. This interplay of light not only enhances the three-dimensionality of the mountains but also adds a layer of mystical allure to the whole landscape. The sun, partially obscured, casts an array of rays that blanket the ground, creating a path of light that seems almost tangible.Karl Wiener's "Sonnenstrahlen" invites viewers to pause and reflect, to feel the quietude and majesty of nature. It encapsulates a moment of serene beauty, frozen in time through deft strokes of chiaroscuro.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
