More about this artwork

The evocative painting titled "Landschaft" by artist Karl Wiener, created around 1923, stands as a striking example of expressionistic landscape art. This piece captures a boldly simplified portrayal of a natural scene, where artistic emotion prevails over realistic detail. The composition focuses on a large, central tree with a vividly green canopy, contrasting dramatically against a color-divided backdrop that suggests both fields and sky.The tree, with its exaggerated and rounded form, anchors the scene, imparting a sense of solidity and life amidst the flowing, abstractly rendered contours of the land. Beneath the tree, the earth is divided into colorful segments of yellow, orange, and green, illustrating rolling hills or farmlands in a stylized manner. Above, the sky is depicted with horizontal bands of blue, darker at the top and lighter toward the horizon, suggesting depth and atmosphere in a minimalistic style.Karl Wiener's use of bold, unblended colors and decisive, heavy outlines enhances the painting's expressive quality. This work invites viewers to contemplate not just the natural world, but the interplay of color, shape, and emotion, capturing a moment of serenity and boldness frozen in time.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
