More about this artwork

Karl Wiener's striking watercolor piece, "Aus meinem Leben, 50 Blätter XVIII" (From My Life, 50 Sheets XVIII) created in 1923, presents an intriguing exploration of form and color. At first glance, the radiant tones form a captivating circular pattern at the center. Starting from the innermost area, a calm white progresses outward through gentle blue and vibrant green, eventually reaching into a warm surrounding embrace of orange and deep red. This progression suggests a dynamic movement, almost like the natural phenomena of a sun setting or perhaps the ripple of water.Encasing these vivid hues, the bottom part of the painting is dominated by a band of deep blue and violet shades, abstractly suggesting a landscape or a horizon embracing the incandescent orb. The contrast between the fiery tones of the circle and the cooler, shadowy hues at the base introduces a tension between warmth and coolness, light and shadow.Interpretations are left wide open; some may see the depiction of a sunrise or sunset at the ocean or perhaps a stylized representation of an all-seeing eye or cosmic event. This painting offers a reflection on the broader themes of life discussed in the series, perhaps hinting at the cyclical nature of existence and the universe's unfathomable depth.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
