More about this artwork

Within the serene embrace of the night, "Landschaft II" by Karl Wiener unfolds a tranquil nocturnal landscape steeped in a profound sense of calm and solitude. Painted in 1943, this evocative piece draws the viewer into a world where nature's quiet dominates and human presence is subtly integrated. The painting depicts a moonlit scene dominated by the imposing forms of dark, forested hills that ascend into a rich, navy-blue sky. A crescent moon, pale and gentle, casts a subdued light, softening the outlines of the hills and the dense forest below. This delicate illumination reveals two quaint houses nestled among the trees, their walls and roofs reflecting the moonlight and lending them an almost ethereal quality. The artist’s use of a limited, cool palette emphasizes hues of blues and greens, creating a harmonious and soothing visual experience. Wiener's technique captures the stillness of the night with a graceful economy of detail, allowing the shapes and colors themselves to convey the quiet beauty of the scene."Landschaft II" is more than just a visual representation; it's a meditative piece that invites the onlooker to pause and immerse in the quietude of nature under the night sky, reflecting perhaps on the enduring calm amidst the world's turbulence during the time of its creation in 1943.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
