More about this artwork

1922Karl Wiener's evocative piece, "Verzweiflung" (which translates to "Despair" in English), is a striking example of expressionism from the early 20th century. This powerful work, created around 1922, vividly captures a moment of intense emotional turmoil. The painting depicts a solitary figure, portrayed in a dynamic and somewhat distorted style characteristic of expressionist art. The figure, seemingly male, is caught mid-stride, with one arm flung upward and his head dramatically tilted downwards, which suggests a gesture of profound despair or exhaustion. His body seems to be enveloped by or merging with the dark, textured backdrop, possibly symbolizing the overwhelming nature of his emotions. The use of dark blues and black enhances the mood of the painting, while the textured strokes contribute to a sense of turbulence and restlessness. The ground beneath the figure is rendered in contrasting greens, subtly suggesting an external environment but primarily focusing the viewer's attention back on the figure's internal state."Verzweiflung" is a profound artistic exploration of human emotion, reflecting the angst and uncertainties of the era in which it was created. It invites viewers to contemplate the depth of human despair and the emotional intensity that Karl Wiener so masterfully captured on canvas.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
