More about this artwork

Our current exhibit includes a compelling piece by Karl Wiener titled "Ohne Titel (Laubbaum)" [Untitled (Deciduous Tree)], dating from around 1924. This artwork captures the solitary elegance of a tree, rendered with exceptional detail by Wiener. The painting showcases a single leafy tree, emphasizing its lush, green foliage and the twisted, robust form of its trunk. Set against a plain, light background, the tree dominates the composition, inviting viewers to focus on the minute details and rich textures that Wiener masterfully brings to life through his use of line and color. The underlying strength and resilience of the tree are palpable in how it slightly leans, suggesting perhaps the challenges of weather it has withstood. This artwork is a beautiful representation of nature’s quiet beauty and strength, rendered in a style that is both intricate and clear.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
