More about this artwork

Karl Wiener’s painting "Komposition aus ‘Pflaster und Wiese’ III," painted in 1924, is a captivating example of early 20th-century expressionism that engages with urban and natural elements in a harmonious composition. In this striking artwork, the viewer is presented with a striking contrast between the geometric rigidity of urban architecture and the organic flow of nature. The foreground of the painting features an abstract representation of a meadow, illustrated through soft, curving shapes and vibrant colors that suggest movement and life. The earthy tones and the repetitive, wave-like patterns in this section evoke the tactile sensations of a bustling grassland, gently swaying under the breeze.Above this naturalistic base, the painting transitions dramatically into an urban landscape. A series of meticulously aligned buildings stretches across the middle of the canvas, depicted in a more structured and rigid manner. These edifices are rendered in a palette of yellows and oranges, set against a stark line that separates them from the meadow below. This clear demarcation not only highlights the contrast between man-made and natural environments but also reflects on the coexistence and boundary between these two worlds. The skyline is topped with sweeping, stylized clouds that float over the city, rendered in blues and purples that add a dreamy, almost melancholic quality to the scene. These elements interact to create a layered perspective that invites contemplation about the balance between urban development and natural landscapes.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
