More about this artwork

"Abschied" is a captivating piece by artist Karl Wiener, masterfully rendered in delicate pencil strokes that convey a profound narrative steeped in emotion and parting. The title, German for "farewell," perfectly encapsulates the essence of the scene depicted. The artwork features two figures, a man and a woman, portrayed from behind as they walk together, yet poised on the precipice of departure. Their proximity and the gentle touch seen where the woman's hand rests on the man’s arm suggest a close bond, possibly hinting at a deep, personal relationship facing a moment of separation. The composition of the drawing guides the viewer’s focus along the sharp, geometric lines that intersect and frame the central figures, enhancing the feeling of a fragmented reality perhaps symbolic of the imminent division between the pair. The background, with its abstract and architectural elements, suggests an urban setting, offering a stark, impersonal contrast to the intimate farewell playing out in the foreground.Wiener's use of perspective and shadow not only highlights the figures but also adds a layer of depth to the emotional landscape of the scene. The figures themselves are depicted in a style that marries realism with a touch of the abstract, their features simplified yet expressive enough to convey the weight of the moment.Overall, "Abschied" by Karl Wiener is a poignant exploration of departure and the human connections that make farewells so significant.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
