More about this artwork

Karl Wiener's fascinating artwork, "Frauen und Vision" ("Women and Vision"), encapsulates a mystique that draws viewers into a narrative steeped in symbolism and abstract forms. This evocative piece features two women interacting with an enigmatic figure composed of cubic and stark linear segments, suggesting a robotic or totemic form. This figure, intriguingly, has a face reminiscent of a skull, placing a strong emphasis on the themes of mortality and the unknown. On the left, a woman is portrayed in a dynamic pose, leaning forward with her hand poised near her face in a gesture of thoughtfulness or shock. Her engagement with the figure suggests a deep contemplation or a sudden realization. On the right, another woman stands, more passively, her gaze seemingly directed towards the viewer rather than the central figure, introducing an intriguing break in the narrative flow and perhaps suggesting an external awareness of the scene or a disconnection from the central event. The backdrop is minimally detailed, pushing the focus towards the characters and the central figure. Cubistic elements in the scenery harmonize with the constructivist form of the central figure, seamlessly integrating the abstract with the human.Wiener's use of a monochromatic palette and his emphasis on linearity give the work a stark, almost graphic quality, focusing attention on the interplay of forms and the emotional resonance of the figures.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
