More about this artwork

Karl Wiener, circa 1920On our website, we present a captivating illustration by Karl Wiener, an artist known for his distinctive style and thoughtful composition. His work, "Wanderer und zwei Vögel am Himmel" (Wanderer and Two Birds in the Sky), crafted around 1920, is a fine example of his artistic expression. In this monochrome piece, Wiener uses stark black lines against a cream background to depict a solitary figure trekking through a vast landscape. The artwork is divided into three primary layers that create a sense of depth and movement. The foreground features the wanderer, bent forward as if bracing against a strong wind, nearing a fence that partially obscures a rugged terrain suggestive of a field or a hill. This human element introduces a narrative of journey and resilience. The middle ground is sparsely decorated with a simple, upright fence post and hints of the rugged terrain continuing. It transitions smoothly into the sweeping background, where Wiener employs horizontal lines to illustrate a dynamic, swirling sky. Two birds are inscribed into this sky, their forms minimal yet vivid against the dense pattern of air currents or clouds."November." inscribed subtly suggests the time of year, adding an element of loneliness or contemplation associated with late autumn.Wiener's artistry in "Wanderer und zwei Vögel am Himmel" evokes a serene yet poignant mood, offering viewers a moment of reflection on the themes of solitude and the relentless passage of nature.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
