More about this artwork

We are thrilled to feature "Räuber" (circa 1921) by Karl Wiener, a compelling piece evoking the vivid dynamism of early 20th-century Expressionism. This artwork presents a dramatic nocturnal scene, masterfully crafted through layered, textured patterns and a controlled color palette. Wiener uses stark black silhouettes of two figures, giving an impression of movement and secrecy, which harmonizes with the title "Räuber", meaning "robbers" or "thieves" in German. The figures are immersed in a mysterious, almost maze-like environment, suggesting a narrative of stealth and intrigue. The backdrop is a mesmerizing contrast of geometric and organic forms, with deep blues and structured, angular shapes composing the night sky and rugged, undulating terrains beneath. This use of patterning not only adds depth to the scene but also intensifies the emotional pull of the painting, as viewers are drawn into the secretive world of the figures."Räuber" invites its audience to delve into a narrative that is as enigmatic as it is visually striking. Each element, from the composition to the color use, is meticulously placed to build tension and story, showcasing Karl Wiener's unique ability to blend form and function in his art.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
