More about this artwork

"Frohe Weihnachten," a charming graphic print by Karl Wiener from 1919, invites viewers into a nostalgic, festive scene. Rendered in a simplistic yet evocative linework style, this artwork captures the essence of a peaceful Christmas. The composition features a quaint arched doorway, likely of a robust, historical building depicted with textured strokes suggesting rustic stonework. Hanging prominently in the center of the arch is a large, lush Christmas wreath, symbolizing the festive spirit and the traditional celebrations of the season. The wreath's abundant foliage, possibly holly or fir, is adorned with ribbons, enhancing the holiday ambiance. In the background, soft shadows hint at a cobblestone pathway leading towards the doorway, inviting the onlooker to imagine stepping into a warm, welcoming interior. Further enriching the scene, a warmly glowing lantern hangs to the side, casting an intimate light that accents the rough texture of the walls and the cobblestone path, suggesting a contrast between the cold outside and the promise of warmth inside. This piece, titled in German "Frohe Weihnachten" meaning "Merry Christmas," serves not only as an artistic representation but also as a heartfelt festive greeting.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
