More about this artwork

Karl Wiener's "Lächeln," which translates to "Smile" in English, is a compelling piece of art that vividly captures the essence of human emotions through its striking use of color and form. Created around 1924, this painting portrays two figures set against a vibrant and almost ethereal backdrop that radiates outward in hues of red, yellow, and orange. The painting features two profiles; one of them appears more prominently in the foreground, showcasing a distinct expression of contentment or gentle musing. This figure, adorned with a brown hat and dark attire, is highlighted by a soft blue aura that suggests a sense of calm and introspection. The other profile, partly obscured and set against the powerful warm background, directs their gaze outward, underlining a forward-looking perspective wrapped in thought.Wiener's use of contrasting and harmonious colors evokes a deep emotional resonance, suggesting themes of inner peace, contemplation, and maybe a shared moment between the figures. The backdrop could be interpreted as a sunset or sunrise, symbolizing change or renewal. This adds an additional layer of meaning to the interaction between the figures, who seem to be connected yet individually wrapped in their own thoughts."Lächeln" not only showcases Karl Wiener's mastery of color and emotion but also serves as a beautiful reminder of the subtle and profound moments of human connection.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
