More about this artwork

Dive into the lush, rolling vistas captured in "Landschaft in der Obersteiermark" by the artist Karl Wiener, painted in 1943. This magnificent artwork showcases Wiener’s profound connection to nature and his unique ability to translate it onto canvas. The painting presents a serene view of the Upper Styria countryside, featuring the verdant, sloping hills that characterize this picturesque region. Bright greens and deep browns dominate the palette, articulating the dense forestation and the rich, fertile earth. Gentle undulations of the hills convey a rhythmic calmness, while the play of light and shadow adds depth and dimension. The remote horizon, shrouded in a haze of blues and faint grays, hints at the vastness and the untouched purity of this highland vista.Karl Wiener's technique, characterized by broad, sweeping strokes and a rich application of color, brings out the vibrancy and the dynamic contours of the landscape. There's a feel of immediacy and spontaneity in his brushwork, which makes the landscape appear alive and breathing."Landschaft in der Obersteiermark" not only captures the aesthetic beauty of the Steiermark region but also evokes the timeless and tranquil spirit of nature. This piece is a brilliant example of how art can transport us to different locations, enabling us to appreciate the infinite beauty of the natural world from the comfort of our surroundings. We invite you to linger over this breathtaking landscape, to explore its depth and to discover the nuances of color and form that Karl Wiener masterfully laid down in this historical piece.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
