More about this artwork

Delve into the rhythmic abstraction of "Länge," a captivating piece by the artist Karl Wiener, crafted around 1921. This painting pulls viewers into an intricate dance of lines and colors, where every stroke contributes to a greater visual symphony. The work is characterized by its dynamic diagonal elements and a rich tapestry of intersecting, textured strokes that build a lively, yet harmonious composition. In "Länge," Wiener employs a bold red diagonal line that cuts through the dense, scribbled patterns of green, yellow, and ochre hues. This assertive red line disrupts the naturalistic color palette, adding a layer of dramatic tension and contrast that challenges the viewer’s eye to navigate across the canvas. The textured layers and the use of cross-hatching not only emphasize motion but also create a palpable sense of depth and vibrancy. The composition is enclosed within a marked blue border at the top edge, subtly framing the chaotic energy within and perhaps suggesting a window or a boundary to this abstract landscape. Wiener’s signature, prominently placed at the bottom, anchors the work, reminding us of the artist’s role as both creator and curator of this visual experience."Länge" stands as a testament to Wiener’s adeptness in balancing form, color, and motion, inviting viewers to explore a world where emotion and abstraction intersect gracefully.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
