More about this artwork

Karl Wiener’s “Landschaft” (1943) is a stunning landscape painting that captures a serene and simplistic beauty. The artwork features bold, flat areas of color creating a vivid and stylized depiction of the countryside. The dominant blues and greens set a calm and refreshing tone, portraying a typical rural scene with a touch of whimsy and abstraction. In the painting, the observer’s eye is immediately drawn to the central element of a small house with a striking red roof, nestled in the heart of an expansive green field. This quaint building is surrounded by lush, rolling hills that stretch across the canvas. To the right, a line of rounded, almost cartoonish trees stands before a dense forest that climbs up the valley side, leading to the horizon. The sky, a deep and unblemished blue, occupies the upper half of the painting, signaling a clear and peaceful day. The simplicity in the form, and the clarity of colors used in this piece, reflect Wiener’s unique style, focusing on the harmony between man and nature."Landschaft" evokes a sense of tranquility and timeless grace, making it a captivating piece that appeals to admirers of both modern and traditional art.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
