More about this artwork

"Der Barbar" (ca. 1926) by Karl Wiener is a captivating portrayal that beckons viewers into a primitive and untamed world. Dominated by the figure of a barbarian, who appears both awe-struck and harmonious within his natural surroundings, the painting is a dynamic exploration of man in relation to nature.Set against an ethereal backdrop of a deeply hued sunset, the barbarian stands among the towering trees, his hand reaching out as if to touch or hold something invisible. His muscular form is accentuated by the glow of the setting sun, emphasizing his raw power and elemental connection to the world around him. The details of the verdant foreground contrast with the mysterious, more monochromatic mountains and the vibrant, fiery sky, creating a multidimensional space that pulls the observer into its depths. The colors employed by Wiener are particularly striking, with the contrast between the dark greens and blues of the forest against the brilliant oranges and reds of the sky, suggesting a liminal time between day and night, civilization and wilderness. This painting invites exploration of themes such as the primal aspects of human nature, the awe-inspiring power of the natural world, and perhaps the introspective quest for meaning beyond the material realm.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
