More about this artwork

Karl Wiener's "Nacht" presents a compelling vision of the nocturnal urban landscape that tempts a deeper contemplation of solitude and introspection. This distinctly stylized artwork, created around 1923, draws the viewer into a seemingly quiet street corner under the cover of night. At first glance, the inky darkness of the sky is punctuated by small, yellow dots that suggest stars or perhaps distant city lights, evoking a sense of the expansive universe above and beyond the immediate scene. Dominating the composition is a large, angular building that cuts sharply into the sky. The building's facade vibrates with dynamic, textured strokes of yellow and black, implying the reflection of sparse street lighting or the glow from within. Two luminous windows suggest a presence, unseen yet palpably felt, behind the walls.A solitary street lamp stands as the only clear source of light, casting an eerie glow that barely reaches the dark corners of the building. This lamp, central to the scene, not only illuminates the immediate area but also symbolizes a beacon of warmth in the cool, enveloping night."Nacht" by Karl Wiener entices viewers to ponder the quiet moments of urban nights—times that resonate with both the tranquility and the mysterious solitude of nocturnal life.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
