More about this artwork

Welcome to the vivid world of Peter Paul Rubens, as showcased in his enthralling masterpiece "The Crowning of Roxana" from the 17th century. This painting, exhibiting Rubens' signature robust and dynamic style, captures a moment of historical romance and dramatic visual storytelling. In the heart of the artwork, we witness the crowning of Roxana by her new husband, Alexander the Great. Roxana, bathed in a gentle light that highlights her purity and beauty, is seated modestly, her demeanor submissive yet dignified as she accepts her new role. She is partially draped in a rich, red fabric that enhances her form and accentuates the central focus of the composition.Beside her, Alexander, adorned in a golden robe that reflects his royal status, gazes at Roxana with an expression of adoration and pride. His gesture, as he places the crown upon her head, is both tender and possessive, an emblem of their union and his conquests.Surrounding the couple are figures that add layers of emotion and complexity to the scene. Cherubs float above, symbolizing the divine approval and joy of this union, while attendants near them express various attitudes of celebration and servitude.Rubens' masterful use of color, light, and shadow not only highlights the physical beauty of the figures but also imbues the scene with a sense of depth and vibrancy. The dynamic composition and the emotional intensity of the subjects draw viewers into this historic and romantic moment, making it a timeless testament to Rubens' artistic genius. This painting not only represents a significant episode from classical antiquity but also serves as an exceptional example of Baroque art’s power to convey narrative drama and human emotion through rich, tactile detail and energetic composition.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
