More about this artwork

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s painting "Bauer mit Pferdeschlitten" (1927), translates to "Farmer with Horse Sleigh," is a vibrant representation of rural life with a dramatic expressionist style. This image captures the raw energy and movement of a winter scene where a farmer maneuvers a horse-drawn sleigh through a snowy landscape. The painting is dominated by bold swatches of blue and white that create both the crisp chill of the winter air and the dynamic motion of the horse and sleigh.Kirchner's use of angular lines and sharp contrasts enhances the sense of speed and urgency, conveying the brutal force of winter and the resilience required to navigate it. The background, though minimally detailed, features hints of dark trees and red marks that might indicate buildings or other structures, adding a sense of depth and context to the scene.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
