More about this artwork

"Stillleben neben geschnitztem Stuhl" (Still Life Beside a Carved Chair, 1909) is a vivid and engaging painting by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a renowned German Expressionist painter. In this artwork, Kirchner masterfully interweaves color and form to push the boundaries of traditional still life painting. The painting features an intricately carved chair partially visible on the left, its dark tones and swirling motifs imparting an almost primitive vigor. This rustic element contrasts with the burst of life on the table beside it, where a bowl brimming with fruit sits. The fruits are rendered in vibrant yellows and blues, stark against the shadowy chair, suggesting a juxtaposition between the animate and inanimate objects. The backdrop is simplistic, executed in muted green and sparing brush strokes, which directs the viewer's focus to the foreground. Kirchner's use of color, line, and form encapsulates the crux of Expressionism: portraying emotion and subjective perception over realistic representation. This piece, like much of Kirchner’s work, is not only a visual feast but also an exploration of mood and expression. It invites viewers to ponder the artist's connection to the everyday objects depicted and their arrangement, reflecting possibly on the nature of art and life itself.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
