More about this artwork

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a seminal figure of the German Expressionist movement, brings to life a vivid and emotionally charged scene in his 1915 painting, "Schlemihls Begegnung mit dem Schatten" (Schlemihl's Encounter with the Shadow). This artwork, rich in symbolism and dramatic intensity, offers a stunning visual representation of the inner turmoil and existential angst. In the composition, two central figures dominate the scene, separated into distinct color zones and contrasting forms. The figure on the left is brightly colored in blue and orange tones, exuding vibrancy and life. This figure appears animated and somewhat distressed, casting a long, dark shadow that stretches toward the second figure, a stark, black silhouette. This shadow figure, devoid of detailed features, projects a sense of mystery and perhaps, foreboding. The background, a tapestry of bold yellows and green lines, suggests an outdoor setting, possibly a field or a park, that is both idyllic and unsettling. The use of angular lines and contrasting colors heightens the emotional tension between the figures, underscoring themes of identity, self-perception, and metaphysical reflection that are central to Kirchner's oeuvre."Schlemihls Begegnung mit dem Schatten" brilliantly encapsulates the essence of Expressionism by emphasizing subjective emotions over objective reality, portrayed through Kirchner’s use of distorted forms and exaggerated colors. This painting not only offers a visual exploration of the shadow as a metaphor for psychological depth and complexity but also invites viewers to ponder their own internal shadows and the encounters we face within ourselves.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
