More about this artwork

"Alte Frau mit Katze" (1922) by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner captures an intimate and serene portrait of an elderly woman accompanied by her cat. Created in the expressive style that Kirchner is renowned for, this artwork explores the theme of companionship and old age with a poignant simplicity. The artwork is characterized by its textured, almost raw etching techniques, which lend a sense of depth and emotion to the subjects. The elderly woman is depicted with delicate, yet discernible lines that trace over her facial features and enveloping hood or shawl, suggesting both her fragility and the warmth of her character. The presence of the cat, curled up contentedly beside her, adds a layer of companionship and domesticity to the scene, emphasizing the comfort and solace pets often provide. Employing a largely monochromatic palette, Kirchner's work here is subtle yet powerful, capturing a moment of quiet reflection that resonates universally.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
