More about this artwork

Edgar Degas' "Dancer" (1880-85) is a penetrating exploration of the world of dance, a theme central to much of his work. This pastel artwork illuminates the artist’s fascination with the physicality and the poise of ballet dancers. The subject is portrayed in a moment of repose, capturing a sense of introspection and perhaps, weariness. Her head is gracefully tilted downwards, and her arms rest delicately on her legs, suggesting a break in between rehearsals. The use of pastels allows Degas to blend soft yet vibrant hues, creating translucency in the dancer’s ethereal tutu while imbuing her skin and hair with a texture that is almost tangible. The background, with its abstract swathes of green, conveys a sense of the space’s depth and the solitary contemplation of the dancer.
