More about this artwork

Egon Schiele's "Self-Portrait with Lowered Head," painted in 1912, offers a captivating glimpse into the artist's complex inner world. This self-portrait is a striking example of Schiele’s intense, expressive style, characterized by its raw emotion and textured detail. In this work, Schiele presents himself with a direct and haunting intensity. His head is tilted downward, his eyes cast upward meeting the viewer's gaze, creating a powerful psychological encounter. This positioning of the head and eyes hints at a mix of vulnerability and confrontational energy, signifying an introspective moment caught in time. The textures of the painting are rugged; Schiele uses sharp, angular lines to shape his hair and facial features, while the skin appears almost translucent, marked by hues of brown, red, and sickly greens which underscore the emotional and physical rawness. The sporadic use of white space not only isolates the figure but also emphasizes the dramatic expression and moodiness of the portrait. This self-portrait, like many of Schiele’s works, pushes the boundaries of traditional portraiture. It challenges viewers to confront not just the figure in the painting but also their reactions to such an unvarnished human expression.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
