More about this artwork

This painting by Wassily Kandinsky, titled "Draft for ‘All Saints II (composition with saints)’" from 1911, exemplifies his transition into abstraction, which would later define much of his career. In this draft, we see an intricate, vibrant interplay of colors and forms that presents a dynamic and somewhat enigmatic narrative. The work features a chaotic yet harmonious assortment of shapes and figures, possibly depicting saints and angels interacting amid abstract elements. The colors are vivid, ranging from deep blues and fiery reds to soft yellows and greens. These hues contribute to a dreamlike, otherworldly scene. Characteristic of Kandinsky's style during this period, the piece leans away from traditional representational art and more towards expressing emotions and ideas through colors and abstract forms.Throughout the composition, various human-like figures can be discerned. Some appear as if in motion—perhaps dancing or floating—blending with the more abstract elements that might symbolize spiritual or mystical themes. On the left side of the painting, there is a figure resembling an angel with wings, hovering over the scene. This celestial being connects different elements of the image with sweeping lines, suggesting a dynamic flow of energy throughout the piece.Towards the right, complex patterns and a plethora of intense colors obscure any definite forms, emphasizing the transition to abstraction that Kandinsky was exploring at the time.
