More about this artwork

"Bathing Men on Rocks" by Edvard Munch, painted in 1915, is a vivid and expressive representation of figures in a natural setting, specifically engaged in the act of bathing. The painting features a group of male figures positioned on and around large, multicolored rock formations that stretch toward a body of water. The composition uses bold, swirling contours and a lively, intense palette to evoke movement and the raw beauty of the natural environment. The rocks are rendered in shades of green, orange, and blue, suggesting perhaps the play of light and shadow during a specific time of day.Munch captures human figures in various postures: sitting, standing, and reclining, which contribute to a sense of leisure and relaxation, yet also evoke a primal connection to nature. One figure stands prominently on a rock, dominating the foreground with a contemplative stance as he looks out over the water. Another figure in the midground sits facing away from the viewer, while a third lies on a rock, closer to the viewer. The rough, almost tactile brushwork enhances the visceral quality of the scene, emphasizing the immediacy and sensory experiences of the landscape.Overall, this painting reflects themes common in Munch's work, such as the exploration of human emotions and the connection between individuals and their environments.

Edvard Munch (12 December 1863 – 23 January 1944) was a Norwegian painter. His best known work, The Scream (1893), has become one of Western art's most iconic images.

His childhood was overshadowed by illness, bereavement and the dread of inheriting a mental condition that ran in the family. Studying at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania (today's Oslo), Munch began to live a bohemian life under the influence of the nihilist Hans Jæger, who urged him to paint his own emotional and psychological state ('soul painting'); from this emerged his distinctive style.
