More about this artwork

"Drei alte Damen" (1922) by Edvard Munch is a compelling artwork that captures a scene of three elderly women seated in an indoor setting. Each woman is comfortably nestled into what appears to be a plush, high-backed armchair. The sketch is done in a loose, expressive style typical of Munch, giving it a somewhat dreamy, ethereal quality. In the artwork, the figures are sketched with expressive lines that suggest rather than delineate their features and garments. Each woman exhibits a unique demeanor:1. The woman on the left is depicted with her hands lightly clasped, perhaps in her lap, and she has a somewhat introspective or distant gaze, as if lost in thought. 2. The central figure seems more engaged with others or her surroundings, hands poised as if she’s talking or gesturing, adding a dynamic contrast to the more reserved poses of her companions. 3. The figure on the right holds an object, possibly a small book or card, adding an element of personal activity or distraction to the composition.Additionally, the background is interestingly adorned with floating heads or faces, adding a surreal, whimsical touch that plays with the concept of memory, presence, or the passage of time, themes often explored in Munch’s work. The overall mood of the painting seems quiet and reflective, suggesting themes of aging, companionship, and the interior lives of the subjects.

Edvard Munch (12 December 1863 – 23 January 1944) was a Norwegian painter. His best known work, The Scream (1893), has become one of Western art's most iconic images.

His childhood was overshadowed by illness, bereavement and the dread of inheriting a mental condition that ran in the family. Studying at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania (today's Oslo), Munch began to live a bohemian life under the influence of the nihilist Hans Jæger, who urged him to paint his own emotional and psychological state ('soul painting'); from this emerged his distinctive style.
