More about this artwork

"Melankoli II" by Edvard Munch, created in 1898, is a powerful visual exploration of deep emotional states, a theme Munch often revisited in his work. This lithograph, characterized by its stark, contrasting colors and simplified forms, portrays a solitary figure in a moment of intense emotional struggle or contemplation. The person is bent forward, their head resting in their hands, which conveys a sense of overwhelming grief or despair. The use of a vivid red for the figure's attire intensifies the emotional impact of the image, contrasting sharply with the dark, textured background that could symbolize the tumultuous inner world of the subject. The background and the relatively undefined landscape elements use rough, almost abrasive textures that enhance the feeling of turbulence and unease. This image, like much of Munch's work, delves into the complexities of human emotion and the existential angst of the individual. The simplicity of the composition focuses the viewer's attention on the emotional state of the figure, making it a compelling representation of melancholy and introspection. This piece is reflective of Munch's ability to encapsulate profound human experiences in visually striking ways, making tangible the intangible depths of human emotion.

Edvard Munch (12 December 1863 – 23 January 1944) was a Norwegian painter. His best known work, The Scream (1893), has become one of Western art's most iconic images.

His childhood was overshadowed by illness, bereavement and the dread of inheriting a mental condition that ran in the family. Studying at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania (today's Oslo), Munch began to live a bohemian life under the influence of the nihilist Hans Jæger, who urged him to paint his own emotional and psychological state ('soul painting'); from this emerged his distinctive style.
