More about this artwork

"Southern Landscape" by Jules Pascin, created in 1917, is a vivid and lively depiction of everyday life in a bustling southern town. The painting uses a palette of soft yet rich colors, capturing the warmth and sunlit atmosphere typical of the region it portrays. In the foreground, the scene is bustling with movement and life. There are several figures engaged in various activities that bring dynamism to the canvas. On the left, there's a horse-drawn carriage, possibly a focal point of local transportation, adding a sense of movement and old-world charm. Nearby, individuals appear engaged in conversation or possibly trade, suggesting a marketplace or gathering spot. The middle of the painting features a large tree, which acts as a central axis, offering shade and a natural meeting point for the townspeople. Beneath it, children and adults are scattered in small groups, some seated, further adding to the casual, communal feel of the scene. On the right, the painting shows more people and animals, including another horse, indicating perhaps the outskirts of a market or a less crowded area of the town. The background features buildings and palm trees, lightly sketched but sufficient to frame the scene and offer a sense of place, suggesting a tropical or semi-tropical locale.Overall, Pascin's brushwork is loose, imbuing the scene with a sense of immediacy and the fleeting nature of moments glimpsed in passing.

Nudes, street scenes and landscapes of women and tropical locations by Bulgarian-born American painter Jules Pascin (1885-1930). Born to an affluent family, Pascin was educated in Austria and Germany before moving to Paris in 1905. It was there that he became associated with the Modernist movement. He attached himself to the human condition and was known for painting portraits of nude and half-dressed women. He stands in the grand tradition of the romantic, bohemian artist.
