More about this artwork

"The Artist's Sister at a Window" is a poignant painting by the French Impressionist artist Berthe Morisot. The painting depicts Morisot's sister, Edma, seated by a window with a tranquil yet poignant stance. She is shown engrossed in embroidery, which she holds delicately in her hands, suggesting a moment of peaceful solitude. The painting characteristically employs light brushstrokes and a luminous palette that capture the play of light and shadow beautifully, which is very typical of Morisot's style. The soft, pastel colors contribute to the overall calm and gentle mood of the scene. The attention to detail, especially in the portrayal of the white dress, highlights Morisot's skill in depicting fabric and texture, making the dress almost shimmer with a life of its own.Outside the window, one can see a glimpse of a balcony and the façade of a building across the street, providing a glimpse into the urban setting. The contrast between the interior's intimacy and the exterior's public nature emphasizes the secluded and reflective world the subject inhabits. This painting is not just a portrait of Morisot’s sister; it is also an exploration of the themes of feminine domesticity and introspection, rendered with a tender and empathetic touch that invites viewers to reflect on the quiet moments of their own lives.

Landscapes and still life by French impressionist painter Berthe Morisot (1841–1895). She was celebrated for the feminine qualities of her paintings, intuitiveness, spontaneity and delicacy, and she often included her daughter Julie in her paintings. Berthe was married to the brother of Édouard Manet, and some say she was his muse, as she modeled in many of his paintings.
