More about this artwork

The painting "The Mother and Sister of the Artist" by Berthe Morisot, an Impressionist painter, depicts an intimate and quiet domestic scene featuring two women, who are the artist's mother and sister. The setting is an elegantly appointed living room, radiating a sense of comfort and peacefulness. On the right, we see the artist’s sister engrossed in reading a book, her expression focused and contemplative. She is dressed in a dark, formal dress that contrasts with the lighter surroundings. On the left, the artist's mother is seated with a distant, thoughtful gaze, as though she is either resting or caught in a moment of reflection. She wears a white blouse adorned with a delicate blue ribbon that gives a touch of color mirroring her gentle demeanor. The room is filled with ornate details that suggest a bourgeois home. There's a richly framed painting on the wall behind them, perhaps a nod to the artistic environment in which Morisot was raised. A small round table holds a few books and a vibrant bouquet of flowers, adding life and color to the scene. The floral pattern on the upholstered sofa also complements the overall aesthetic of gentle opulence.Morisot’s loose and quick brushstrokes capture the light and textures of the room, typical of the Impressionist style, focusing on the effects of light and color over strict detail.

Landscapes and still life by French impressionist painter Berthe Morisot (1841–1895). She was celebrated for the feminine qualities of her paintings, intuitiveness, spontaneity and delicacy, and she often included her daughter Julie in her paintings. Berthe was married to the brother of Édouard Manet, and some say she was his muse, as she modeled in many of his paintings.
