More about this artwork

"The Artist's Daughter, Julie, With Her Nanny" by Berthe Morisot, captures a tender and intimate moment between Julie Manet, the artist’s daughter, and her nanny. In this painting, Morisot's use of loose brushstrokes and soft, flowing colors imbues the scene with a gentle and affectionate atmosphere.Julie, prominently placed at the left of the composition, is depicted with a serene expression, her face softly highlighted and framed by light-colored ribbons in her hair. Her youthful innocence and slight smile suggest she is comfortable and at peace in her nanny's presence. The nanny, positioned to the right, is shown in a more subdued color palette, predominantly in shades of blue with her head down, focused on Julie. This downward gaze along with her protective posture creates a sense of attentive care and devotion to Julie. The background reveals a glimpse of a garden or park through what appears to be a window, enhancing the sense of domestic tranquility and the private world shared between Julie and her nanny. The setting is suffused with a sense of light and air, typical of Morisot's impressionistic style, which effectively captures the essence of the moment rather than its meticulous details.Overall, Morisot's painting is a beautiful representation of familial love and the figures' bond, portrayed through her distinctively vibrant and emotive brushwork.

Landscapes and still life by French impressionist painter Berthe Morisot (1841–1895). She was celebrated for the feminine qualities of her paintings, intuitiveness, spontaneity and delicacy, and she often included her daughter Julie in her paintings. Berthe was married to the brother of Édouard Manet, and some say she was his muse, as she modeled in many of his paintings.
