More about this artwork

"Portrait of Morton D. May" by Max Beckmann, painted in 1949, is an intriguing artwork that dives deep into the character and essence of its subject. Beckmann's painting style here is marked by its intensity and the visceral manner he portrays human figures. Morton D. May emerges in this work as a serious, somewhat enigmatic young man.The portrait features May, chest up and facing directly towards the viewer, with a stark and indelible expression. His eyes, slightly uneven, appear contemplative and somewhat penetrating. Beckmann renders May's features with a degree of exaggeration typical of his style, which often distorts physical reality to capture deeper psychological truths.May's attire, consisting of a tan-colored suit jacket and a crisply ironed white shirt, is complemented by a sharply contrasting geometric-patterned tie. The use of thick paint application in bold strokes invokes a sense of depth and texture, particularly notable in the treatment of the suit. One of the most distinctive aspects of this work is Beckmann's color palette – the use of murky earth tones juxtaposed with the cold grey-blues adds a layer of complexity to the emotional impact of the portrait. The background is subtly executed, with a column or sculptural detail on the right-hand side that adds an element of classical dignity and framing to the composition.Overall, Beckmann's portrait is far more than merely a visual representation of Morton D.

Actors, cabaret singers, heroes and thugs in a harsh postwar urban life by German artist Max Beckmann (1884-1950). His paintings show boldness, lust, and pain through delineated figures. The Nazi rule forced Beckmann to resign as an art professor and declared his artworks as degenerate. He later left for America where he lived in exile, yet remained active as an artist.
