More about this artwork

This captivating artwork by Utagawa Toyokuni illustrates the actor Segawa Roko in the role of Ohara, a woodseller, depicted in the traditional Japanese woodblock printing style known as ukiyo-e. The painting features Ohara as a striking figure, demonstrating grace and determined effort as he leads an ox. The character's expression suggests a blend of concentration and weariness, indicative of his laborious task.Ohara is dressed in an eye-catching traditional outfit with a deep green kimono adorned with delicate floral patterns, which contrasts beautifully against the bold, solid black of the ox. His headgear and the flowing, lighter-colored fabric of his garments suggest movement and add a dynamic element to the static image. The ox, intricately detailed, with visible fur texture and a decorated horn, adds a significant visual interest to the composition. The artist has skillfully captured a cultural narrative and the daily life scene through vivid and expressive detail, bringing to life the characters of traditional Japanese tales and occupations within a historical context. The backdrop, featuring a hint of flowering branches, softly complements the main figures, emphasizing their activities without distracting from their portrayal. The use of muted colors except for strategic highlights helps focus the viewer’s attention on the interaction between Ohara and the ox, illustrating a moment of everyday life in historical Japan.

Utagawa Toyokuni (1769-1825) was a prominent Japanese woodblock printmaker and painter of the Edo period. Born in Edo (now Tokyo), he was the chief disciple of Utagawa Toyoharu, a well-respected printmaker. He specialized in kabuki theater prints, which depicted famous actors in performances and featured dramatic scenes from plays. In addition to kabuki theater prints, Toyokuni also produced portraits of geishas, landscapes, and scenes from everyday life. He eventually became a leading master of the Utagawa School.
