More about this artwork

This painting by Utagawa Toyokuni represents a vivid depiction of Ushiwaka-Maru, a figure often identified as the young Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a famous and highly skilled military leader in Japanese history. The painting features Ushiwaka-Maru dressed in elaborate warriors' armor, intricately detailed with floral patterns and traditional symbolic motifs. He sports a confident expression, conveying both pride and readiness, which is representative of his legendary prowess and strategic mind in warfare. The armor is particularly elaborate, indicating his noble status and the significance of his role in the tales and historical accounts he belongs to. This style is typical of ukiyo-e prints, where subjects—often figures from folklore, history, or kabuki theatre—are stylized with a strong emphasis on color and pattern detail. In the background, there appears to be kanji text, likely providing context or perhaps poetic commentary that enhances the narrative or thematic substance of the depiction. The choice of colors, shapes, and line-work contribute to a dynamic yet balanced composition, emphasizing the persona of Ushiwaka-Maru as both a celebrated warrior and a cultural icon. The artist, Toyokuni, has effectively captured the blend of youthful vigor and the heroic aura that surrounds Ushiwaka-Maru in Japanese cultural and historical lore.

Utagawa Toyokuni (1769-1825) was a prominent Japanese woodblock printmaker and painter of the Edo period. Born in Edo (now Tokyo), he was the chief disciple of Utagawa Toyoharu, a well-respected printmaker. He specialized in kabuki theater prints, which depicted famous actors in performances and featured dramatic scenes from plays. In addition to kabuki theater prints, Toyokuni also produced portraits of geishas, landscapes, and scenes from everyday life. He eventually became a leading master of the Utagawa School.
