More about this artwork

"The Crucifixion" by Albrecht Dürer is a profoundly detailed and emotive depiction of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, a central motif in Christian art. In this painting, Christ is depicted on the cross at the center, flanked by the two thieves who were crucified alongside him, according to the New Testament accounts. This scene is set against a dramatic and stormy sky, which adds a solemn and somber tone to the entire portrayal. In the foreground, the painting is vivid with a variety of figures that represent different reactions to the crucifixion. There are Roman soldiers, some on horseback, who appear indifferent or directly involved in the execution. Close to the cross, we see mourning figures, likely representing the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist, who are depicted in deep sorrow, their poses and expressions conveying immense grief. The meticulous attention to detail in the figures’ costumes and the landscape, including the distant view of a city, are characteristic of Dürer’s work, reflecting both his skill and the artistic standards of the Northern Renaissance. The painting also includes symbolic elements such as the skull at the base of the cross, which traditionally represents the site of Adam’s grave, suggesting that Christ's death redeems the original sin.Albrecht Dürer's portrayal not only conveys the physical and emotional torment of the scene but also invites the viewer to contemplate the spiritual significance of the crucifixion.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
